Funke Akindele’s ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ has left Nigerian cinemas after a record-breaking run that culminated in a total gross of ₦1.4 billion.
After opening in theaters on December 15, 2023, and earning a record-breaking ₦113 million in its first weekend, the film made history as the first Nollywood production to gross over ₦1 billion in theaters in early January 2024.
The comedy film centers on five impoverished brothers who, in an attempt to keep their sick mother alive, must experiment with a life of crime.
The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) released data showing that, after 11 weeks, the film’s final weekend, which took place between February 23 and February 25, only brought in ₦14,745 from its two screens.
Before disappearing from the weekly top 20, A Tribe Called Judah had a final gross of ₦1,404,207,541, with 374,552 ticket admissions.
In addition, the movie was shown in twelve different regions of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Guinea, Rwanda, Senegal, and Togo, as well as in Ghana and the United Kingdom.
With Omo Ghetto: The Saga (636 million Naira) in third place and Battle on Buka Street (668 million Naira) in second, Akindele easily occupies the top three positions for Nollywood’s highest-grossing films.
