‘Squid Game’ will get a second season! Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has finally given fans some answers about the future of his smash series ‘Squid Game,’ months after leaving them in the dark.

Without giving too much away, the show’s creator announced plans for a widely-anticipated sequel with Netflix in a recent interview.

“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” Hwang said. “So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season.”

In an interview with Lee Jung-jae, the show’s lead actor, the filmmaker also revealed that he will return as Gi-Hun to “do something for the world.”

This will be Hwang’s first public announcement of a sequel. In an exclusive interview with Variety, the filmmaker stated that he has no intentions for a second season.

“I don’t have well-developed plans for Squid Game 2. It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers room and would want multiple experienced directors.

“It took me six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes. Then I consulted verbally with friends, and picked up clues for improvements through my own pitching and from their responses.”

On September 17, Hwang’s nine-episode thriller series premiered to critical praise. With over 100 million global views in just a few weeks, it had shattered a significant record as Netflix’s most-watched series.
