High Court Keeps Former CBN Governor Emefiele in Kuje Prison, Postpones Bail Decision

Emefiele will stay detained until the court’s decision on the bail motion, which is expected to be made on November 22.

In order to await the outcome of his bail application, Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been placed under remand in Kuje prison by Judge Hamza Muazu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

Emefiele will remain in custody until November 22, when the court is scheduled to deliver its ruling on the bail motion.

The decision was made following a dramatic courtroom scene in which Rotimi Oyedepo, representing the Federal Government, fiercely opposed Mathew Burkaa SAN, the lead attorney for Emefiele, as he presented the bail application.

Following the hearings from both sides, Justice Muazu declared that the volume of legal authorities cited by the opposing parties precluded the immediate delivery of a bench ruling.

The judge stated that he would need some time to thoroughly examine the evidence presented by Emefiele to support his bail request as well as the authorities.

Emefiele’s transportation to the detention facility is allegedly being arranged by officials from the Kuje prison authority. The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is currently in limbo, awaiting the court’s ruling on Wednesday, November 22.
