Grammy award winner Burna Boy has bagged another international award at the 21st annual BET Awards in the category of “Best International Act.”
Aya Nakamura, Diamond Platnumz, Emicida, Headie One, Wizkid, Young T & Bugsey, and Youssoupha were among the other candidates in the category.
The BET Awards, which honors black achievement in entertainment, were presented on Sunday at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.
Burna Boy was there on stage with his mother, Bose Ogulu, to accept his prize.
“I’m on my third one in a row. Are you following me? After accepting the coveted honor, he remarked in a backstage video, “Love you BET, no stopping.”
Burna Boy won the Grammy for Best Global Music Album in March for his song “Twice as Tall.”
Other candidates in the category included Tinariwen from Mali and Antibalas from the United States.
Burna Boy has received his second Grammy nomination. In the same category, he received his first nomination in 2019 for his album ‘African Giant.’ Despite his loss at the Grammys last year, music pundits anticipated that he would have a stronger chance this year.
Burna Boy’s debut studio album, ‘LIFE,’ was released in 2013 and is an abbreviation for ‘Leaving an Impact For Eternity.’ Burna Boy followed up LIFE with two further albums, ‘Redemption’ in 2015 and ‘Outside’ in 2018, both of which featured the Kanye West-endorsed song ‘Ye,’ which has over 129 million YouTube views.
Following the international recognition that ‘Ye’ received, his 2019 album ‘African Giant’ received even more praise.
It landed him a Grammy nomination, a victory at the MTV Video Music Awards, and a shoutout from former US President Barack Obama (who put it on his favourite songs of 2019 list).
