The Recording Academy has announced the inclusion of new Grammy Awards categories for 2024.
By Omotayo Olutekunbi
The Grammys are the largest reward in music, celebrating the accomplishments of performers in the United States and catering to Latin, Jamaican, and international categories.
The Academy announced the inclusion of three new categories in the 2024 edition on June 13, 2023.
The new categories are Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album, and Best Pop Dance Recording.
The new categories followed the introduction of two new categories last year: Best Songwriter and Best Song for Change.
The Best African Music Performance category will be welcomed by African musicians, particularly Afrobeats, whose music has propelled the African continent to the global stage.
Until the new Best African Music Performance category was established, Nigerian and African celebrities fought for the Best Global Music Performance Category, where Wizkid, Burna Boy, Femi Kuti, and Angelique Kidjo were all nominated.
The Best Global Music Performance Category was won by South Africans Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini, and Nomcebo Zikode for their song ‘Bayethe’ in the previous year.
Adding the African category would offer African performers a greater chance of winning the prestigious medal.
