The Finland Embassy in Nigeria has denied circulating a letter in which the Finnish government told a Biafra agitator residing in Finland, Simon Ekpa, to stop calling for the establishment of a Biafra republic or face arrest and prosecution for terrorism.
The clarification was provided to Punch’s reporter in a statement on Thursday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Leena Pylvanainen, on Tuesday for suspected hate speech and inciting remarks attributed to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra-led party.
The organization allegedly organized a sit-in and stated that elections would not be placed in the South-East area.
The Finnish embassy stated in a statement that the letter did not originate in Helsinki.
It read, “This is to inform you that the attached letter purporting to be signed by the Prime Minister of Finland and currently circulating widely in the media does not originate from the Finnish government.
“We have reported the Twitter message with which this fake letter was originally distributed and asked Twitter to remove it. Regrettably, copies continue circulating in social media and on various internet platforms.
“The Embassy would greatly appreciate it if you could take this information into account in your reporting.”
