The Enugu governorship election petitions tribunal has upheld Governor Peter Mbah’s victory in the March 18 gubernatorial poll, with the judgement favouring Mr. Mbah, who ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. The ruling was announced on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 21, 2023.
Mr. Edeoga had sought a court declaration as the duly elected governor of Enugu. Among the issues in dispute before the tribunal was the validity of Governor Mbah’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate, challenged by the Labour Party, alleging non-compliance with mandatory youth service requirements prior to his 2003 political role.
The panel members found that the petitioner failed to substantiate the forgery allegation since the NYSC witness involved was not presented as a witness in their proceedings.
Mr. Mbah’s election victory is marred by debates over the legitimacy of the votes cast during the election, with concerns about widespread electoral malpractice and rigging, notably in Owo and Ugbawka.
