C.J. ‘Fiery’ Obasi’s Nollywood feature Mami Wata has earned another huge worldwide agreement.
According to Deadline, Dekanalog has acquired the West African folktale. Dekanalog and CAA Media Finance negotiated the acquisition.
The American film and soundtrack distribution business has now purchased the North American rights to the filmmaker’s third feature picture.
Following this recent acquisition, the film will likely hit theaters in the United States later this year.
This latest arrangement follows Obasi’s Sundance, FESPACO, and a worldwide distribution agreement with Paris-based sales-producer-distributor Alief.
Mami Wata is set completely in Benin, West Africa, and follows Mama Efe (Rita Edochie), a go-between for the people and the all-powerful water goddess Mami Wata.
When a virus kills a little kid, Efe’s loyal daughter Zinwe (Uzoamaka Aniunoh) and dubious protégé Prisca (Evelyne Ily Juhen) find themselves at a crossroads.
Evelyne Ily, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Kelechi Udegbe, Rita Edochie, and Tough Bone star in the film, which was directed by Oge Obasi and edited by Nathan Delannoy, with cinematography by Brazillian DP Llis Soares.
Seven years in production, the film continues to get positive feedback as it makes its festival rounds.
