Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that no one can scare him over his selection as a presidential candidate amid rumors that he is endorsing Peter Obi, the Labour Party, LP, flag bearer.
The former president revealed this in Enugu State at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo National Secretariat.
Obasanjo claimed he had lost blood and entered prison, so no one could intimidate him on his choice of a presidential candidate. He had visited the Secretariat with Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the head of Afenifere, and Obi.
“I have shed my blood for this country. I have gone to prison for this country.
“So, what are you going to frighten or threaten me with? The only thing that my senior brother (Adebanjo) hasn’t done is that he hasn’t shed his blood but he has gone to prison but we will leave that aside.”
According to him, Nigeria’s issue was more national than ethnic.
The former president bemoaned the lack of a leader with the proper kind of character in Nigeria.
“The problem we have in our hands in Nigeria is not ethnic. It is national. And for me, the most important thing in a leader is character.
“If I put my hand on someone, it means that comparing with the other, I see that there is a merit that will be of benefit to Nigeria,” he said.
To express their condolences for the passing of First Republic Aviation Minister Mbazulike Amaechi, they went to the Secretariat.
In a widely shared video, the former president could be seen escorting Obi, who was seated at table 9, to table 1. The audience clapped in approval of the action.
Obasanjo said, “In the presence of Nigerians,” as he moved forward to choose the former governor of Anambra State from his previous position.
He led Obi to the first table and said, “My duty is done.”
