The Black Excellence in Music, Culture, and Sports (BET) Awards was held on Sunday.
With a brilliant performance of her most recent song, “About Damn Time,” Lizzo opened the Taraji P. Henson-hosted evening.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Friday, a number of the presenters, performers, and award recipients made calls for action.
But there were also happy times. Brandy performed unexpectedly with Jack Harlow, while Mariah Carey performed unexpectedly with Latto, displaying some remarkable high notes.
Sean “Diddy” Combs was honoured with a lifetime achievement award. He was honoured by a slew of fellow musicians and previous colleagues, including Mary J. Blige and Kanye West.
Will Smith, who slapped Chris Rock on stage soon before winning the Academy Award for best actor, won the BET Award for best actor on Sunday.
