Selena Gomez, the most followed star on Instagram at one point, has explained the reason for her four-year absence from the platform.
She just launched her mental health platform Wondermind. Selena told Good Morning America on Monday that she has been avoiding the internet for almost four years in order to safeguard her mental health.
The actress stated that distancing herself from social media made her feel “normal” and that she had made significant mental progress.
“Growing up in the spotlight has definitely taught me so much,” she said, “I can’t believe I am where I am mentally just because of how I took the necessary steps in order to kind of remove myself from that because it’s just not normal.”
“I haven’t been on the internet in four and a half years, it has changed my life completely. I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people. It makes me feel normal.”
In September 2018, Gomez revealed that she will be going away from social media. After a “emotional meltdown,” Gomez allegedly enrolled into a mental health treatment centre a month later to address her melancholy and anxiety.
The singer disclosed in 2020 that she had been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.
Gomez, her mother, Mandy Teefy, and Daniella Pierson, a media professional, collaborated on Wondermind. The movement aims to democratise and de-stigmatise mental fitness by giving expert support.
