Mr Uche Nnaji, a businessman, has won as the All Progressives Congress candidate in Enugu State.
News Agency of Nigeria
Nnaji’s victory came after the party’s Electoral Committee, chaired by Mr Sheriff Jalaba, successfully organised a governorship primary election in Enugu on Thursday.
During the exercise, which was overseen by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he collected 1,070 votes out of 1,100 ballots cast, making him the party’s sole approved candidate.
The APC gubernatorial candidate thanked party delegates for their support and pledged not to let them down in his acceptance speech.
Nnaji, a member of the Nkanu West Local Government Area, promised that if elected, his government will endeavour to improve the situation, “the decaying infrastructure in the state, which the PDP had supervised in the last 23 years.”
He claims that the government would engage with the people to find answers to the state’s problems and difficulties, such as security and water.
All indigenes and other inhabitants of the state will be stakeholders in his government, he stated.
Mr Ugochukwu Agballah, the state APC chairman, had earlier stated that the party was out to overturn the status quo that had left the ruling PDP unopposed in the state since Nigeria’s return to democracy.
After the gubernatorial primary, Agballah stated the party will begin enormous mobilisation and sensitization of the voters on its commendable plans for the state in order to gain their support.
According to the APC chairman, the party offers an alternative and strong political platform that would free the people of Enugu state from the PDP’s long history of mismanagement and bad governance.
The Chairman of the APC Electoral Committee also praised the party’s delegates for behaving maturely and orderly during the process.
