By Adeke Chukwuka

The Senate has promised swift consideration of the new minimum wage bill from the executive, aiming to enhance workers’ welfare and promote industrial harmony.

Senator Diket Plang, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour, and Productivity, made this announcement in a statement.

Senator Diket Plang assured that the 10th Senate is dedicated to enhancing workers’ living conditions. He praised the efforts of the Federal Government and Organised Labour in reviewing the minimum wage, expressing readiness to promptly pass a new act once negotiations conclude and the bill is transmitted to the National Assembly.

Senator Plang praised the federal government’s efforts to prevent a nationwide workers’ strike through an agreement with the NLC and TUC. He urged all parties to uphold the agreements and avoid any breaches.

The committee is dedicated to the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) principle of decent work. It will take legislative measures to enhance working conditions, including ensuring the payment of a living wage, aligning with the goals of the decent work agenda.
