Foreign secretary of the United Kingdom Liz Truss will be sworn in as prime minister by Queen Elizabeth tomorrow in Balmoral after winning the election to lead the Conservative Party.
After a crisis forced Boris Johnson to resign a few months ago, Ms. Truss defeated former finance minister Rishi Sunak to win the seat.
She received 81,326 votes, or 57.4% of the votes cast by Conservative Party members, compared to Mr. Sunak’s 60,399 votes, or 42.6% of the total votes voted.
The UK will elect Ms. Truss as its third female prime minister.
She reaffirmed in her acceptance speech that she will serve as a conservative leader true to her campaign platform.
“We need to show that we will deliver over the next two years. I will deliver on a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy; I will deliver on the energy crisis dealing with people’s energy bills but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply. I will deliver it to the National Health Service. But we all will deliver for our country,” Ms. Truss said.
She also expressed her gratitude for being chosen as the Conservative Party’s leader on Twitter.
“Thank you for putting your trust in me to lead and deliver for our great country.I will take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential,” she tweeted.
The Queen will accept Boris Johnson’s resignation tomorrow, at which point she will name Ms. Truss as the next prime minister.
Ms. Truss will appoint her cabinet members upon her confirmation.
