On Friday, November 10, 2023, an appellate court in Lagos affirmed Barr Peter Mbah’s election as the Governor of Enugu State. The decision, delivered by a three-man panel of the Appeal Court, followed a case filed by Barr Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party (LP).
The court’s ruling upholds the Enugu Tribunal’s verdict from September 9, 2023, where Hon. Justice K.M. Akano and the tribunal confirmed Peter Mbah’s victory in the March 18 governorship election. In that election, Mbah secured 160,895 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Edeoga, who garnered 157,552 votes.
Despite the Enugu Tribunal’s decision, Edeoga, unsatisfied with the verdict, pursued legal action by taking the matter to the Appeal Court to contest the trial court’s ruling.
However, in the judgment delivered on Friday, the Appeal Court dismissed Edeoga’s appeals, citing a lack of merit.
All three key issues central to the appeal were resolved in favor of Peter Mbah, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The appellate court’s decision marks the conclusion of the legal battle, solidifying the legitimacy of Governor Mbah’s election.
