In defiance of the federal government law, the River state Governor, Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has signed into law a measure to collect Value Added Tax (VAT) in the state.
The law was quickly passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly, after a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt determined that the Rivers State and other states of the federation, asides the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), are not constitutionally empowered to collect VAT.
The Open Rearing and Grazing Prohibition Law No 5 of 2021, the Child’s Rights Amendment Law No 2 of 2021, the Residents Registration Agency Law No 6 of 2021, and the Naming and Renaming of Infrastructure Law No 3 of 2021 were also signed into law by the governor.
