African Union Suspends Gabon Amidst Coup

By Adeke Chukwuka

The African Union (AU) has suspended Gabon’s membership due to a military coup that ousted President Ali Bongo. The AU’s Peace and Security Council strongly condemns this takeover of power in Gabon.

Gabon’s participation in all activities of the African Union (AU) and its institutions has been suspended “with immediate effect until constitutional order is restored in the country.”

The African Union (AU) has recently suspended several countries, including the Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, and Sudan, following military coups in these nations.

The European Union, represented by top diplomat Josep Borrell, strongly opposed the use of force to seize power in Gabon. Borrell emphasised that Gabon’s challenges should be resolved through the principles of the rule of law, constitutional order, and democracy. He stressed that these actions are crucial for Gabon’s peace, prosperity, and regional stability.
