Movie Review; The Woman King (2022)

Woman King takes us on a journey of what it takes to put your people first, find redemption, and own your fate.

By Amy Adindu

Costume:

Every outfit worn by the cast is beautiful and properly detailed from the colors to the stitching. The hairstylist did well even the makeup was on point.

Accent and Mannerism:

For the first time, the “African” accent in a  Hollywood movie wasn’t forced. Can we give John Boyega his flowers because the Nigerian father in him came out, from his facial expression to his body movement, the way he delivered his lines? Be prepared for the memes and WhatsApp stickers that are coming your way.

 Cast:

Black don’t crack, all the warrior female cast are in their 30’s except Viola Davis who is 57,  especially South African actress Thuso Mbedu “Nawi”, like did she drink from the fountain of youth or what?

Storyline:

Every scene was was captivating, from the mother-daughter finding their way back to each other, to the defeat of the Oyo soldiers and the end of the slave trade, the movie is based on true events although the characters are fictional and dramatized.

Fight Scenes:

The fight scenes between Viola and Jimmy were what it was, beautiful, and to know  that they practiced and performed most of their stunts?… just Woah

The Crew:

Is it just us or did anyone notice that most of the top spots were handled by women? The director, producers fight choreographer, and costume designer.

Soundtrack:

Let’s just say “ Terence Blanchard “is a genius, because the songs paid homage to our African roots, sung in Yoruba, Igbo or English they were properly harmonized. My favorite tracks have to be “Blood of our sisters’ ‘sung during their blood oath and their war song.
