On Monday, May 15, 2023, two days after his attack on a police officer, Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti visited the Ikeja police command.
Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, escorted the youngest son of Afrobeat artist Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
On Saturday, May 13, 2023, a viral video showed Kuti beating a uniformed police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge.
According to the footage, Kuti continuously shouted at the officer, manhandled him, and then hit him in the face.
Shortly after the video went viral on social media, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, issued a statement ordering the musician’s arrest.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.
“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly,” the statement read.
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, who confirmed his visit, the artist handed himself in and has been arrested.
“Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative. He has been placed under arrest”, Hundeyin said.
Hundeyin stated in another tweet that the artiste is now being interrogated at the State CID Panti in the Yaba region.
