Fetty Wap, a New Jersey rapper, was sentenced to six years in jail on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, for his involvement in countrywide narcotics trafficking.
The rapper, best known for his chart-topping single Trap Queen, which portrays the narrative of a love affair entwined with the drug underworld, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute more than 500 kilos of cocaine.
Fetty Wap has been detained since August 2022, when his bail was revoked after he showed a handgun and made threats on a FaceTime conversation. He was placed in protective custody at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn due to safety concerns.
In front of Judge Joanna Seybert in Central Islip, New York, his lawyer contended that he had supported his family and children and needed money after the epidemic interrupted the live performance.
Prosecutors said the rapper exploited his celebrity to promote the drug trade, citing a music video for Trap Queen in which youngsters appeared as extras. They urged a heavier sentence, citing the pandemic’s influence on drug consumption.
His counsel emphasized his difficulties before his music success and criticized the prosecution’s exploitation of his celebrity for obtaining a heavier punishment.
Judge Seybert acknowledged the rapper’s ascent to prominence and his supporting family but emphasized the severity of his crime and the concerns highlighted by his behavior while on bail.
Fetty Wap apologized for the devastation drug usage has brought to communities before getting a sentence one year longer than the minimum.
In addition to his term, a former New Jersey prison officer was sentenced to six years for operating as a cocaine courier. The other co-defendants have pled guilty and are awaiting punishment.
Fetty Wap is a rapper, singer, and songwriter from the United States. Despite losing his left eye to glaucoma, he came to stardom with “Trap Queen” in 2015.
