The World Bank has stated its willingness to work with Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to empower youths, generate employment, and enhance their skills.
Elena Glinskaya, the World Bank’s Lead Economist for Youth Employment and Skills Development, announced this during a courtesy visit to the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.
Glinskaya praised the NYSC for including the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development program in the Orientation Course, noting that the vocational training corps members get at their orientation camp has assisted many in becoming self-sufficient.
“Anyone who is working on issues of youth employment in Nigeria must learn about the NYSC programme. This is a well established programme that has helped youths, and we will like to know as much as possible about your programme”, she said.
In response, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, Director-General of the NYSC, stated that the system was intended to foster national unity and cohesion.
He further added that the NYSC has been equipping corps members with vocational skills since 2012, resulting in thousands of ex-corps members becoming self-sufficient in various occupations throughout the country.
Ahmed also informed the World Bank team that one of his five policy priorities is to develop the Scheme’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development initiative.
He reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to encouraging the spirit of entrepreneurship and self-reliance among corps members.
The Director-General praised the World Bank staff for their kind gesture.
He stated that the collaboration will aid the NYSC in its mission of empowering youngsters and eliminating unemployment in Nigeria.
