The Little Mermaid Grosses ₦31 Million In Nigeria, Tops The Box Office 

The live-action version by Disney had a successful debut weekend.

The Little Mermaid has had its theatrical release in Nigeria.

On May 26, 2023, Disney’s most recent live-action adaptation debuted in theaters nationwide. In only two days, it made 31.25 million.

Filmone distributes the film, has 63 locations nationwide, and has brought in 39. 29 million.

The 2023 adaption, comfortably in second position with $53.9 million, is only surpassed by Fast X, whose ticket sales have already decreased by 35%.

The Bride Price from Nollywood is still doing well with viewers despite three foreign films grabbing the top three spots.

The indigenous film has earned 24 million after four weeks on the market. The Nigerian film, which reportedly became the first Igbo native film to have the broadest theater distribution, is still doing well despite fierce competition from Hollywood films.

Outside of Nigeria, The Little Mermaid has overtaken Vin Diesel’s movie, which had held sway for a week in cinemas, to take the top place at the worldwide box office with $209 million.

The high-profile live-action adaptation of the beloved 1989 animated picture is succeeding domestically. Still, it’s struggling overseas owing to conflicting reviews, severe criticism, and a boycott call from certain Disney fans.

The film, starring Halle Bailey as the title heroine and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, is directed by Disney stalwart Rob Marshall (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Mary Poppins Returns).

Awkwafina, Javier Bardem, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, and Art Malik are among the cast members, as Jonah Hauer-King and Daveed Diggs.
