Sowore Orders Femi Adeyeye, Others Detained By Police At UNILAG Protest To Be Released Immediately

As reported by SaharaReporters, members of the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force opened fire on UNILAG students and members of the National Association of Nigerian Students who were protesting the school’s decision to increase fees.

Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) candidate for president in 2023, has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Femi Adeyeye, an activist, and other protesters who were detained by members of the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Police Force while participating in a demonstration against a fee increase by the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) informed the police on Tuesday of their plans to organise a nonviolent protest at the University of Lagos on September 6, 2023.

Considering that the freedom to protest is a fundamental human right, NANS has cautioned the Department of State Services (DSS) from doing so.

An update, however, revealed that the police had broken up the protest, fired at the demonstrators, and detained a few students.

However, after upsetting the peaceful demonstration, the lawless police agents also detained activists Femi Adeyeye, Philip Olatinwo, and two other demonstrators.

Reacting to the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sowore said, “I read somewhere that the @PoliceNG claimed that @activistfemi was arrested because @UnilagNigeria authorities claimed that @activistfemi is/was no longer a student of the University, this tad argument is the most idiotic I’ve heard in a while.

“I think the University of Lagos didn’t understand that the University is a public institution, run with the taxes of the Nigerian people, and as such can’t be secluded from public interest, including protests.

“The @PoliceNG must release @activistfemi unconditionally and understand that its ground belongs to the Nigeria people. #FeesMustFall #RevolutionNow.”
