Kaduna Electric to Refund Overbilled Customers in Compliance to NERC

According to Kaduna Electric, it will comply with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) order requiring it to refund overcharged consumers.

This is stated in a statement released by Kaduna Electric’s Head of Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi.

Customers who were to receive the refund, had to be prepared to pay off all of their outstanding debts or risk having their service disconnected.

Kaduna Electric and other distribution companies across the nation were penalized for failing to comply with the NERC Capping Order, which instructed them to make sure that unmetered customers are not billed in excess of a predetermined amount.

The goal of capping, according to NERC, is to match the measured consumption of metered customers on the same supply feeder with estimated bills for unmetered customers. All customers who were going to receive the refund, according to Abdullahi, had to be prepared to pay off all of their outstanding debts in order to avoid being disconnected.

He added that the company was weighed down by a huge debt burden, which hampered its efforts at efficient service delivery to customers.

The company said it now had zero tolerance for electricity debt accumulation by customers.

“The company, which operates in Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara states, has to confront the reality of the recent developments in the Nigerian electricity supply industry.

“The distribution companies are required to ensure full remittance to the market for energy received and wheeled to it.”

He explained that one of the major constraints hampering the adequate supply of electricity had been the issue of illiquidity in the sector. He added that the bottleneck can only be overcome with full payments for energy consumed by customers.
