A Thrashing Blow as U.S Lose 3-0 to Sweden

Following a one-year postponement due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. women’s football team was stunned when the Tokyo Olympic games began on Wednesday.

The weekend began with Sweden thrashing the women’s world champs 3-0.

Silver medalists Stina Blackstenius and Lina Hurtig netted goals just before halftime and after the break for the team that had famously eliminated the United States in a quarterfinal shootout.

“It’s very good for us to have this start to the tournament and we can be very proud of how we played this game and take everything positive to the next game,” said Blackstenius.

U.S. saw a 44-match unbeaten streak snapped and will look to bounce back in Group G against New Zealand, who lost 2-1 to Australia.

“We did not play a very good game and that is to take nothing away from Sweden; they played a great game,”

Megan Rapinoe, the US star, stated in an interview, “They found a lot of space in our shape and were very clinical when they got in front of the goal and did very well taking their chances.”
