Spotify today presented Wrapped, an annual round-up of the year’s best artists, albums, songs, and playlists as voted on by Spotify users across the world.
What was Nigeria’s soundtrack in a year when we were adjusting to the new normal.
In the new normal, who still has staying power, and how do our local artists stack up against the world’s top hits and worldwide hitmakers.
Here are the 2021 Wrapped findings, which define how Nigerians seek to keep amused, educated, and connected with their favorite local and worldwide music artists in a first for the area.
Nigerians are the most streamed artists in the country, with Wizkid topping the list. Burna Boy is next, followed by Davido. Drake, who is the fourth most streamed artist, is the only foreign performer in the top five. The top five are completed by Olamide.
Tems is the most streamed female singer in Nigeria, demonstrating the continued popularity of Nigerian music. The second most streamed female musician is 19-year-old Ayra Starr, who is also the November artist for Spotify EQUAL. Doja Cat, who comes in third, is the only overseas performer in the top five. Tiwa Savage is the fifth most streamed female artist, while Teni is the fourth.
LADIPOE’s Feeling was the most streamed tune in Nigeria, followed by Peru by Fireboy DML and Ruger’s Bounce. Understand by Omah Lay is the fourth most streamed single in Nigeria, with Monalisa by Lojay rounding off a Nigerian-dominated top five.
Naturally, Wizkid’s craze of the moment Made in Lagos (Deluxe Edition) is the most streamed album in Nigeria, while the original Made in Lagos is the second most streamed album, topping worldwide sensation Justin Bieber’s Justice, which is third. Davido’s album A Better Time comes in fourth, while Drake’s latest release, Certified Lover Boy, rounds out the top five.
