Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci, two accused, were arraigned by police on Monday, May 16, 2022, for the lynching of Deborah Samuel, a 200-Level Home Economics student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, on May 12, 2022.

According to Pulse, the student was lynched and killed for supposed blasphemy.

The accused, who were co-students of the deceased, were charged with participating in the crime in a Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court.

They pled not guilty.

Deborah’s body was still in a mortuary at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto, and prosecuting inspector Khalil Musa informed the court that an investigation was underway.

Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, who led a team of 34 attorneys, filed for their bail on liberal conditions, citing constitutional requirements and portions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

The accused was detained in a detention facility after the trial judge (name omitted for security reasons) reserved his decision on the bail application.

Deborah was accused of blasphemy on a WhatsApp conversation platform put up by her classmates before being lynched, and she refused to remove her message despite being requested to do so.

Following the arrest of those tied to Deborah’s lynching, a violent street demonstration ensued, with protestors demanding that security forces release them immediately.

On Saturday, Governor Aminu Tambuwal ordered a 24-hour curfew on the Sokoto city. On Monday, he lifted the curfew to be followed from nightfall until morning.
