The number of people killed in a gas explosion in Kano State on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, has risen to nine.

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs said this while announcing the presence to the location of the event of Mustapha Habib Ahmed, Director-General of the National Emergency Agency.

“Nine dead bodies have been recovered so far from the rubble of a collapsed building beside a primary school following an explosion from a gas cylinder at Aba Road in Sabon Gari area of Kano State.

“DG @nemanigeria Mustapha Habib Ahmed was at the site of the incident and coordinated the rescue operations. NEMA is presently coordinating the rescue operations with sister agencies,” the ministry tweeted.

On Tuesday morning, the police leadership in Kano State verified the deaths of four people, alleging that gas, not a bomb, erupted.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government emphasised that the early Tuesday morning Sabon Gari explosion did not take place in a school.

The incident occurred at an animal feed store across the street from the school on Aba Road in the Sabon Gari region of Fagge Local Government, according to state Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba.
