An individual must have creative or technical credits on at least six commercially released tracks on a physical music release or 12 on a digital album to be eligible to join the voting academy. With the support of at least two active Recording Academy voting members, a person who doesn’t meet these criteria can still apply to join as a voting member.
Around 12,000 of the Academy’s total 21,00 members are reportedly eligible to vote, according to Billboard.
To choose the winner, the voters cast their ballots twice. Voters receive ballots during the nomination stage and cast their ballots in the major four categories, as well as other categories relevant to their areas of expertise (Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Best New Artist).
The final voting follows the nomination process, during which the voters are presented with the final shortlist and cast their votes in all of the major categories, including the big four.
