After the collapse of a seven-story building on Banana Island, Lagos, media have been denied access to the estate in order to report from the scene.

The structure in First Avenue, Banana Island, Ikoyi was demolished at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.

Journalists’ attempts to get entry to the estate on Thursday, April 13, 2023, were unsuccessful because the state’s administration barred them from approaching the site of the fallen structure.

Oba Adeoye, an Arise TV correspondent at the estate, claimed that the estate’s leadership provided no compelling reason why reporters are not permitted to enter the estate to assess the situation.

He said that one of the estate officials warned the media who were waiting outside the estate gate that they couldn’t walk past the estate gate.

“We’ve not been given any cogent reason why we’ve not been allowed to go inside the estate to see things for ourselves firsthand”, he reported.

In the meanwhile, no casualties were reported in the event, according to a statement from the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Moreover, neither the National Emergency Agency (NEMA) nor the Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) has acknowledged any casualties from the event.

Meanwhile, rescue efforts by LASEMA, NEMA, and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) are continuing in the estate as media are kept waiting outside.
