Gabon Emerges as Latest African Country to Seize Power From Head of State.

By Adeke Chukwuka

Army officers in Gabon appeared on national television, announcing their takeover of power and annulling the results of the recent election.

They identified themselves as members of the CTRI (Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions) and stated their goal of bringing an end to the current regime to defend peace.

The electoral commission reported that Albert Ondo Ossa, President Bongo’s main challenger, secured second place with 30.77%. Bongo’s camp denied Ondo Ossa’s claims of election irregularities.

It would be the end of Bongo’s family’s 53-year control in Gabon if he were to be removed from power.

Gabon’s former President Omar Bongo ruled for 42 years (from 1967 to 2009), and his son, Ali Bongo, has been President since 2009.
