Aitana Bonmati, the winner of the Ballon d’Or, and Alexia Putellas both scored twice as Barcelona defeated Benfica 5-0 to start their Women’s Champions League title defense on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Lyon crushed Slavia Prague 9-1.
Barcelona wants to win the Champions League for the third time in four years, and their depth was demonstrated by the six players who started in the World Cup final in Sydney in August, where Spain defeated England 1-0.
A crowd of fewer than 5,000 watched Putellas, who was a substitute in the World Cup final after missing almost all of last season due to a serious knee injury, head in the opener with a quarter of an hour played.
Subsequently, Putellas doubled the score with a header from Esmee Brugts that beat the goalkeeper for the Portuguese team, and shortly before halftime, Bonmati scored the third goal with a cool finish.
After Putellas was substituted during halftime, Bonmati scored again seven minutes into the second half, with Caroline Graham Hansen providing the assist.
Shortly after substituting in, Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria scored an overhead kick to seal a resounding victory.
“The motivation for this club is to arrive in the Champions League final every year,” Barcelona’s England midfielder Keira Walsh told DAZN.
“If you look at the mentality of these girls, that’s what I saw when I came in here.
“It was always, constantly being at the top in training every single day. It’s so competitive, and that speaks for itself.”
