At the Pan African Film and Arts Festival in Los Angeles, Tunde Kelani’s film ‘Ayinla’ won its first international prize.

The festival’s ‘Programmers’ Award’ for Narrative Feature went to the film based on the final events leading up to the death of Apala vocalist Ayinla Omowura.
Producer Jade Osiberu rushed to Instagram to share her delight at the award and to announce the film’s Netflix premiere.
“Some great news from @greohstudios 2021 film, in partnership with the legendary @tkelani . Ayinla won big at the Pan African Film Festival a few weeks ago and is FINALLY coming to Netflix in 3 days,” Osiberu wrote.
Remember that the successful film was just licenced by Netflix and is due to appear on the streaming service on May 20, 2022.
The period drama, which stars Lateef Adedimeji as the titular character and features Debo ‘Mr Macaroni’ Adebayo, Bimbo Manuel, Ade Laoye, Bimbo Ademoye, Omowunmi Dada, and Kunle Afolayan (who also serves as executive producer), is set in the 1980s in the weeks leading up to the singer’s shocking death.
Despite only being shown in 33 cinemas, ‘Ayinla’ had a successful theatrical debut, generating over N70 million at the box office. The triumph of the Kelani-directed picture at the box office was followed by award nominations and an AMAA prize in the ‘Achievement in Cinematography’ category.
