Actress Yvonne Orji, who is Nigerian-American, is spearheading the production of a television series for Sony Pictures Television that is based on Ghanaian author Yaa Gyasi’s novel Transcendent Kingdom.
This comes after Orji and Sony Pictures Television announced a two-year first-look deal under which she would create scripted series for cable and streaming.
Orji was nominated for an Emmy in 2020 for Best Supporting Actress after gaining considerable attention for her role as Molly in the HBO Max series Insecure.
Orji’s most recent roles were in the 2021 Hulu comedy Vacation Friends 2 and the horror-comedy The Blackening. Previous credits include voice acting in the Netflix animated series My Dad the Bounty Hunter and Malcolm D. Lee’s comedy Night School. Furthermore.
Gyasi’s second book, Transcendent Kingdom, explores the complicated life of Gifty, a neuroscientist-in-training who studies mouse behaviour patterns in relation to addiction and despair. Gifty is reportedly on a systematic and spiritual journey to make sense of the pain she has witnessed all around her. She alternates between her youth as a first-generation Ghanaian growing up in rural Alabama and her current life in the Bay Area,” according to Deadline.
In addition to being an executive producer for the HBOMax reality series My Mom, Your Dad, she has two well-regarded stand-up specials to her name. Transcendent Kingdom’s publication allows Orji to take a risk and demonstrate her strength as a background force.
