The main topic of discussion among Nigerians on Monday, October 2, 2023, was the release of President Bola Tinubu’s credentials by Chicago State University. His friends and detractors expressed conflicting views on social media.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who ran against Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, asked a US court to require the institution to provide his legal team access to Tinubu’s credentials.
In order to substantiate his claim that Tinubu falsified the academic transcript he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in advance of the election on February 25, Atiku asked for the credentials.
In compliance with the court order, the university released some documents on Monday, including Tinubu’s admission records from August 1977 and June 1979.
Here are the findings about the records the university released about Tinubu:
- Chicago State University affirmed that Bola A. Tinubu indeed attended the university from August 1977 to June 1979.
- The institution confirmed that he was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with Honours on June 22, 1979.
- The Southwest College transcript that Bola Tinubu used to get admitted to Chicago State University indicated that the transcript belongs to a female.
- The admission letter dated August 23, 1977, by the university was addressed to Mr. Tinubu.
- In a document titled Undergraduate Admissions Application, the gender box was marked MALE for Bola A. Tinubu.
- Apart from the Southwest College transcript, all documents bearing Chicago State University indicate that Bola A. Tinubu was a man throughout his studentship at the institution.
