In a world where roles often seem predefined, today’s COG on the Women’s Month “Big 4” list, Mayen Adetiba, has shattered barriers and redefined what it means to be a woman of influence. Born in 1954 in Nigeria, Mayen embarked on a journey that would lead her to become a trailblazer in both civil engineering and the arts, leaving an indelible mark of possibility and hope for women everywhere.
Mayen’s journey began with a vision that transcended traditional boundaries. Initially drawn to accounting, she soon changed paths due to her newly-ignited passion for journalism. From her early experiences on The Bar Beach Show to her memorable role as Lakunle Ojo’s wife in the Village Headmaster, Mayen’s journey was marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence and a refusal to be confined by societal norms.
Setting out to the United States for her university education, Mayen faced challenges that would have deterred many. However, armed with resilience and a thirst for knowledge, she overcame the complexities of academia with grace and determination. Transitioning from New York University to Columbia University, she ultimately pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering before transitioning to Civil Engineering at Columbia and later earning her master’s degree at Cornell University.
Mayen’s impact extends far beyond the engineering industry. As the first woman elected to the executive committee of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the President of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Nigeria, she cleared the path for future generations of women in the field. Her contributions to landmark projects, including the African Union Southern Africa Regional Office and the Summerhill Baptist Church, highlight her unwavering commitment to excellence and service.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mayen’s role as a mother and mentor shines brightly on international levels. Her daughter, Kemi Adetiba, a renowned film director, stands as evidence of Mayen’s enduring legacy of empowerment and resilience. Through her appearance on Kemi’s acclaimed series, King Women, Mayen shared her journey with candor and grace, inspiring countless women to embrace their unique paths with courage and conviction.
Mayen Adetiba’s story is one of resilience, determination, and unwavering dedication to excellence. As we celebrate Women’s Month and honour the achievements of trailblazers like Mayen, let us remember that true greatness knows no boundaries. May her legacy continue to inspire generations of women to reach for the stars and carve out their own paths in a world brimming with possibility.
