Meet Chinwe Ohajuruka, the groundbreaking and revolutionary architect on our Women’s Month “Big 4” list, who’s making waves in sustainable development both in Nigeria and abroad. Born and raised in Nigeria, Chinwe has become a model of resilience, determination, and hope through her innovative approach to affordable green housing and social entrepreneurship.
Chinwe’s journey into the architecture and sustainability sector began with a deep-rooted passion for addressing societal challenges. Armed with three degrees in architecture and three accreditations in green building, she founded Comprehensive Design Services (CDS) in 2012. Her company specialises in designing and constructing solar-powered, energy-efficient homes using Bio-Climatic Design techniques tailored to the local climate. These design techniques make the most of natural resources and the environment’s climatic conditions to reduce consumption and improve energy efficiency.
One of Chinwe’s notable achievements came in 2015 when she was named the Sub-Saharan African Laureate for the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards in France. This prestigious recognition affirmed her dedication to creating positive social and environmental impact through her work.
Through CDS, Chinwe has implemented groundbreaking projects like the Eco-Village in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. These affordable housing prototypes not only provide dignified living conditions but also incorporate sustainable features such as solar panels and self-cooling designs. Chinwe’s commitment to affordability and scalability ensures that her impact reaches the most vulnerable communities.
But Chinwe’s influence extends beyond architecture. As an advocate for gender equality and sustainable development, she actively engages with governments and private organisations to address Nigeria’s housing crisis and promote green initiatives. Her dedication to empowering women and fostering inclusive development sets her apart as a true leader in her field.
In addition to her professional achievements, Chinwe’s personal journey reflects her resilience and determination. From facing the challenges of operating in a male-dominated industry to navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship, she has remained steadfast in her mission to create positive change.
As we celebrate Women’s Month and honour the achievements of remarkable individuals like Chinwe Ohajuruka, let her vision and courage inspire us. She embodies the spirit of empowerment and possibility through her unshakeable commitment to sustainability and social impact. May her story continue to inspire future generations to pursue their dreams and make a difference in the world.
