In Olympic history, Rena Wakama is the first coach to qualify an African basketball team for the knockout rounds—a feat accomplished only once since 1936.
Less than a month after taking the role, Rena Wakama, the coach of Nigeria’s D’Tigress, created history by being the first female coach to win the FIBA Afro Basket title since the competition’s inception in 1966.
The 31-year-old, who was named head coach of the women’s basketball team in June 2023, guided Nigeria’s D’Tigress to their sixth Afro Basket championship on Sunday, August 6.
Before being appointed, Wakama, who was a former member of the national team, worked as an assistant coach at Stony Brooks University in the United States. Her first significant assignment was to defend the tile in Rwanda, which she accomplished.
She was a member of the Nigerian team that went to Cameroon for the 2015 Women’s Afrobasket competition. She played her final year on the team, as Nigeria finished third.
Rena, who was well-known for her stylish outfits on game days, had a brief playing career before electing to pursue a coaching career.
She began as the women’s basketball operations director at Manhattan College and was subsequently elevated to assistant female coach.
She is also the first female coach of the Nigerian national team, a distinction that will undoubtedly be recorded in history. Because of her excellent management, Nicoria continues to exist the winner.
