Supacell, Netflix’s rising series in the superhero category has been on the lips of everyone on the internet but how well do we know the creatives behind this amazing show?
The movie was based on a genetic mutation of the children of people who had sickle cell disease; in some way, that gene gave their children a special superpower that gave them all special abilities. We witnessed feats of telepathy, flight, invisibility, super strength, and speed.
Andrew Onwubolu, popularly known as ‘Rapman’ made his Nigerian culture well known throughout the series. His productions have always been recognized as masterpieces and this one was no exception.
Rapman, who was born in the UK by Nigerian parents was given this stage name based on the fact that he is known for dealing with socially conscious themes as well as his uniquely vivid style of storytelling through the medium of rap.
In the series, the cast consisted of mainly British Nigerian actors including, Tosin Cole(Michael), Adelayo Adedayo (Dionne), Rayxia Ojo (Sharleen), Michael Salami (Gabriel) as the major characters.
Along with the real Nigerian accent, we also spotted an homage to Nigerian cuisine as one of the actors ate what appeared to be Eba with egusi soup.
Also, several songs from Afrobeats artists like Asake’s ‘Amapiano’, Burna Boy’s ‘Taliban’, Wizkid’s ‘Smile’, were used in the series. Viewers as well noticed DJ Cuppy, playing the role of a DJ in one of the episodes.
The unexpected but important intention of “Supacell” is to raise awareness of sickle cell anaemia, a disease that disproportionately affects communities in Nigeria.
The series is enjoyable, educational, and socially important because of the subtle but effective way that this underlying message is integrated throughout the story.
Seeing people of Nigerian background take centre stage and receive the credit they deserve for their tireless efforts is cause for pride.
In the upcoming seasons, we anticipate seeing more of it and most likely more faces in the spotlight.
