Mercy Chinwo Threatens To Sue Obidiz For ₦2 Billion For Using Her Name In A Song 

Mercy Chinwo, an Award gospel singer, has threatened to sue Obidiz for appropriating her name in a non-religious song.

The song “Mercy Chinwo” by Obidiz was released on February 10, 2023. He and the gospel singer are currently at odds over the song, with the artist requesting that he remove it from all streaming services.

The letter, titled “DEROGATORY AND DEFAMATORY USE OF THE NAME AND IMAGE OF MINISTER MERCY CHINWO IN A SECULAR MUSIC AUDIO AND VIDEO: WARNING TO CEASE AND DESIST,” was dated March 23, 2023.

Mr. Obidiz Lawson was charged with using a renowned gospel musician’s name disrespectfully.

In addition, Mercy Chinwo’s attorneys asked Obidiz for four other things.

  1. That you immediately CEASE AND DESIST from any further use of the name and image of Our Client in promotion of your music.
  2. If you take down or cause it to be taken down, the song titled “Mercy Chinwo” which you published on be taken down immediately from all music digital platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Sound Cloud, and any other platform whereby you made such publication.
  3. That you take down or cause to be taken down, the promotional video containing the image and clips of Our Client from all social media platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and any other social media platform where you made such promotion.
  4. That you immediately make public an apology in writing, addressed to Our Client and publicized on all social media platforms whereby you express a retraction and remorse for the harassment, defamation of character, and unauthorized use of Our Client’s name and image.

The letter went on to say that Mr. Obidiz will be sued for 2 billion Naira in damages if he didn’t accede to these requirements.

The in-issue music was still accessible to be streamed as of the time this report was filed.

The administration of Mr. Obidiz has likewise failed to respond to Mercy Chinwo’s request with a public comment.
