Willie Obiano, the former governor of Anambra State, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after being detained for six days.

The ex-governor was apprehended last week at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammad International Airport as he prepared to board a flight to Houston, Texas.

Mr Obiano, who has been on the EFCC’s radar for some time, was arrested on suspicion of corruption.

Obiano was arrested for alleged misappropriation of public funds, including, N5 billion Sure-P and N37 billion security vote which was withdrawn in cash. Part of the funds was also allegedly diverted to finance political activities in the state,” EFCC’s spokesperson, Mr Wilson Uwujaren told.

Obiano was detained just hours after giving over power to Prof Chukwuma Soludo, his successor.

While waiting for the former governor to fulfil his bail conditions, the anti-graft agency granted him administrative bail.
