The debut Spotify Single from Nigeria, a rendition of Davido’s “Dami Duro,” is being released by up-and-coming Nigerian musician and Spotify RADAR Africa alumnus Victony.
By Omotayo Olutekunbi
Victony’s mixtape “The Outlaw King” marked his entry into the music industry. He started off doing Rap music but has since evolved to produce a diverse range of Afrobeats, R&B, Trap, and Afropop sounds. He continued to win over listeners in 2021 with popular tracks including Mayorkun’s “Holy Father” and the critically praised “Pray.” The reflective single “Kolomental” and the viral hit “Soweto” from his most recent album, the Outlaw EP, which was released in May of this year, have collected millions of Spotify listens combined.
The breakout hit by Davido, “Dami Duro,” is a song that almost every fan of Afrobeats is familiar with. The song was included on Omo Baba Olowo’s first album in 2012 and continues to be a mainstay at Afrobeats parties and club nights all throughout Africa.
Victony states in reference to the song’s significance:
“Dami Duro is a really beautiful song by Davido. My favorite part of the track is the hook. It’s very audacious, it’s so powerful. I really, really love that. With the Spotify Singles version, we wanted to do something really different to make it more of a classic and give it this disco feel – I’d say ‘Grandpa Ebelebe’ style.”
Spotify is releasing reinvented versions of songs that many people consider contemporary Nigerian classics, performed by chosen artists, as a way to honor the legacy of Nigeria’s rich musical past. The covers, which are a first for Spotify Africa, demonstrate Spotify’s dedication to serving as the international center for the spread and development of Nigerian music.
