US Restricts Visa Privileges for Ghanaian Citizens

The US State Department stated on Monday that it will restrict visas for people it deems are responsible for undermining Ghana’s democracy.

The move comes ahead of the West African country’s presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7.

For nearly two decades, Ghana’s elections have been calm, free, fair, and transparent. However, claims of voter roll anomalies this year have raised concerns about a potential democratic backslide.

The December elections will be the ninth general election since the country’s return to multi-party democracy in 1992.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was cited as saying that the visa policy announced on Monday would only apply to persons who “undermine democracy,” not the Ghanaian government or people.

Last month, Ghana’s largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), staged statewide protests demanding an audit of the voter rolls.

It claimed to have discovered thousands of unauthorised transfers and removals of voter names.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will stand down this year after serving his second and final four-year term.

The electoral commission approved thirteen candidates to contest in the presidential election.

However, analysts predict it will be a two-man battle between former President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
