Netflix has acquired the rights to Tunde Kelani’s film ‘Ayinla,’ which will be released in 2021.
Shock NG reports that the film based on legendary Apala singer Ayinla Omowura will be available to African subscribers on May 20.
The Jade Osiberu-directed film, set in 1980, the same year that Ayinla died, chronicles the events leading up to his death.
Lateef Adedimeji portrayed Omowura, with Debo ‘Mr Macaroni’ Adebayo, Bimbo Manuel, Ade Laoye, Bimbo Ademoye, Omowunmi Dada, and Kunle Afolayan (who also served as executive producer) providing assistance.
Despite only being released in 33 cinemas, ‘Ayinla’ had a successful theatrical run, collecting over N70 million at the box office.
The box office success of the Kelani directed picture was followed by award nominations and an AMAA prize for Achievement in Cinematography.
‘Ayinla’ is the first licensed title from Netflix this year, and it joins the streaming service’s growing catalog of Nigerian content. The Man of God, directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, and the soon-to-debut Ebonylife studio’s ‘Blood Sisters’ were among the first Netflix original films of the year.
‘Afrobeats: The Backstory,’ directed by Ayo Shonaiya, and ‘Glamour Girls,’ produced by Play Network, are among the films set to launch in the coming months.
