Nigerian evacuees from Ukraine have landed in Abuja
By Omotayo Olutekunbi
The first group of Nigerians fleeing the continuing conflict in Ukraine has landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission announced this in a tweet on Friday, March 4, 2022.
The Nigerian carrier Max Air, which was evacuating the people, landed in Abuja at 7:11 a.m. on Friday.
On Friday, around 450 people from Romania arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport’s private jet terminal at 7:10 a.m. (WAT) on a Max Air aircraft.
They are largely students who fled Ukraine to Romania when Russia invaded the nation in Eastern Europe.
They were met by government personnel and would be subjected to paperwork before returning home and self-isolating in accordance with COVID-19 standards. They will be given money by the federal government to help them get to their destinations, according to the government.
The federal government granted $8.5 million on Wednesday for the urgent evacuation of 5,000 Nigerians stuck due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The first group of evacuees was supposed to arrive on Thursday, according to the authorities. The flight, however, was postponed.
