Despite inconsistencies in his record, President Muhammadu Buhari’s nominee was confirmed by the Senate, according to the Senate.
The Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes approved Yahaya Muhammad for a seat on the board of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Senator Hassan Hadejia remarked before Muhammad’s confirmation in plenary on Tuesday, October 5, that his records revealed he began elementary school a year before he was born, but his observation had no effect on his vote for the nominee’s confirmation, along with four others.
The confirmation has sparked widespread outrage, with MPs accused of failing to conduct their due research and rushing the vote through.
The discrepancy was merely a typographical error, according to Kwari Sulieman, head of the Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes, in a statement released on Wednesday, October 6.
He said that the record which Hadejia expressed concern was in the committee’s report, not the nominee’s record.
“An observation was made by Senator Hadejia on the floor of the Senate to point out the typographical error misstating the year of birth to 1969 rather than 1959,” he said.
The EFCC board secretary, George Abang, was also confirmed, as were members Lukman Mohammed, Anumba Adaeze, and Bola Adesina.
