Enugu Govt Plans to Build Ultra-Modern Market in Nsukka

The Enugu State government has commenced plans to build an ultra-modern market in Nsukka.

This was made known in a June 19, 2024, letter by the Acting Surveyor General of the state, Surv. Chime Justus, sighted by our correspondent.

The letter was headed “Completion of Acquisition of Hundred Hectres at Nru, Ede-Oballa, and Eha-Alumona Boundaries for the Purpose Market.”

The Surveyor General instructed the Deputy Director in charge of the Computing Department to urgently outline the steps necessary to ensure the prompt completion of the earlier-started acquisition of 100 hectares of land at the borders of the communities of Nru, Ede-Oballa, and Eha-Alumona in the Nsukka Local Government Area.

The letter reads, “Recall that you had earlier on commenced the acquisition of hundred hectares of land at Nru, Ede-Oballa and Eha-Alumona boundaries for the purpose of market.

“You are also required to intimate the office of the steps needed to commence this assignment immediately to avoid delay.”

Remember that the Enugu State Government had started removing the Ogige Market in June 2023, as the eight-month notice to vacate the market—which was initially intended to be a motor park—had expired. This was done in order to construct the Modern Bus Interchange, which was intended to realign the state’s transportation system.

Our reporter learned that the vendors in Nsukka’s Ogige Market were granted a temporary location at the Aku Road Market.

However, given how quickly the town’s population is increasing, it was stated that there were fears the market could not hold many traders in the future.

Due to this, the Dr. Peter Mbah Administration was forced to decide to start the process of constructing a state-of-the-art market near the boundaries of the communities of Nru, Ede-Oballa, and Eha-Alumona in Nsukka LGA.
