The violence began when angry PDP supporters saw Tonye Cole and his followers on their way to the INEC office.

Nearly two weeks after Rivers state’s gubernatorial and house of assembly elections, supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have continued to engage in post-election violence.
The violence occurred in the state on Monday, April 3, 2023, when supporters of the two parties battled.
According to ThePunch, one individual was injured by a stray bullet and suffered a gunshot wound.
Previously, PDP members in the state held a demonstration in front of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters, asking that all political parties review poll materials together.
The APC, led by Tonye Cole, its gubernatorial candidate, had also threatened to assault the INEC headquarters, demanding the release of Certified True Copies of papers used in the governorship poll.
On Monday, however, while the gubernatorial candidate and his supporters were making their way to the INEC headquarters, PDP supporters reportedly sprinted towards them.
Although the demonstrators allegedly bombarded him with stones and water sachets, the security agents assigned to him protected him and hurried him inside the van. Protesters, though, proceeded to throw sachet water in his way.
According to ThePunch, one of Cole’s security guards fired the shot that struck one of the demonstrators who was approaching him.
