Prof Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s Vice President, left Nigeria on Sunday, January 9, 2022, to attend an Extraordinary Summit of the Economic Community of West African States in Ghana.

The Vice President will represent President Muhammadu Buhari at the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government meeting on Mali’s current crisis.

The meeting in Accra today (Sunday) follows prior meetings and attempts by the leaders to settle the crises in Mali and Guinea, according to a statement from the Vice President’s Office signed by Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity.

Prof. Osinbajo attended meetings with leaders from around the sub-region in 2021 to discuss concerns and find solutions.

On September 8, the VP attended a virtual ECOWAS conference when sanctions were put on Guinea’s military junta, and on September 16, he attended another ECOWAS summit where more penalties on persons and organisations supporting the conflict in Guinea and Mali were considered.

Prof. Osinbajo joined other leaders in Accra in November 2021 for the 3rd Extraordinary Summit of leaders from across the sub-region to evaluate decisions and the political situations in Mali and Guinea.
