It’s the next stop in a journey that has established him as a torchbearer for music in Nigeria and Africa, and he’s now going worldwide on his own terms.
By Omotayo Olutekunbi
Omah Lay, a Nigerian pop artist, has released his sweet, intimate tune “Free My Mind” on KeyQaad Records today. The tune is smooth and luminous, and it fits in beautifully with Omah Lay’s increasing collection of genre-bending pop gems that draw on Afrobeats, vintage rap, seductive R&B, and more.
Omah Lay has already had a full calendar year in 2021. After his sold-out US tour and smash “Understand,” a contemplative yet danceable record fueled by his characteristic vocal warmth, “Free My Mind” follows.
He was also featured on the Masterkraft remix of Justin Bieber’s chart-topping “Peaches” earlier this year. What Have We Done, a spontaneous-feeling presentation of his colorful production, lyrics, and melodies, was released in late 2020.
The remix of his international hit “Damn,” which featured 6LACK, brought the EP to a close. This work has already propelled him from his hometown of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, to the international stage, and each song reveals more of his endearing nature and soothing voice. If “Free My Mind” is any indicator, Omah Lay’s music will soon be heard by more people all over the world.
